Tax Day has a silver lining after all!

Tax season scrabbles my brain.

As college students, we’re often stuck between figuring out whether we are going to claim ourselves on our taxes, or be dependents on our parents’ returns. And because that isn’t stressful enough while trying to deal with midterms and research papers, we have to fill out forms as well, just like those big kid adults do.

I know what I am going to say next might seem like a cruel, and belated, April Fool’s joke. But I assure you, it is not:

FREE FOOD ON TAX DAY!!!!!

Yes, you read that right. Turn your forms in, cross your fingers that you don’t have to pay the state back the money you planned on saving for your big summer trip, and go fill that tummy! Here are some restaurants and/or food stores that are offering free food, promotions or cheap meal discounts on or around April 15, 2010:

P.F. Changs: Visit one of this restaurant’s 193 locations and receive a 15% discount on food and non-alcoholic beverages to lift a little tax-pressure off those shoulders.

Cinnabon: Because there is always room for sweets! Cinnabon will give out free “Tax Day Bites” (also known as bite-size cinnamon rolls called Classic Bites) from 5 to 8 p.m. at all of its mall-based bakeries. (You can also enter their essay contest by writing a short (500 words max) essay telling how “Cinnabon came to your rescue and put some frosting on your crazy, stressful or just plain bad day” and you could be the winner of a $100 gift card!)

Taco Del Mar (west coast): With the phrase, “Taxes Suck. Tacos Don’t,” patrons will receive a free taco at participating locations. Register at the Taco Del Mar website to receive an e-mailed coupon for a free tax day taco.

T.G.I. Fridays: Customers will receive a $5 Bonus Bites gift card with purchases of $15 to $25. Those who spend more than $25 will get a $10 gift card. If you are a member of the T.G.I. Friday’s frequent customer program, double points are in store for you.

Dunkin Donuts: Getting up early? If you are lucky enough to have a Dunkin Donuts nearby on tax day, head on over there. Buy a cup of coffee and get a free donut!

Chick-Fil-A: Bill Simmons will love this one! Okay, so for this one, you’re not necessarily getting the food ON tax day, but you’re still getting the deal. If you make a purchase after April 15th, keep your receipt. Starting on May 1 for 30 days, bring your receipt back in and receive the same items free! (It’d probably be best to call your nearest Chick-Fil-A to make sure they are participating in the promotion before you show up with a receipt for $50 worth of food!)

Whole Foods Market Inc. (IN ATLANTA ONLY): Participating Whole Foods locations in Atlanta will have a tax-free shopping day for all customers on April 15 at its seven metro Atlanta stores.
